Adam Silver speaks on NBA revenue crossing record $10 billion, Kevin Durant trade and more
The NBA has just completed a financially successful year that saw revenue surpass $10 billion for the first time and basketball-related income set a new record of $8.9 billion.
It wasn’t that long ago when some questioned whether sports could survive the coronavirus, at least in the sense that people would want to gather again. Silver said the numbers are especially strong considering the league is still dealing with a pandemic.
The fact that the results surpassed predictions, which represent our beliefs about the direction our firm is headed, surprised me somewhat “said Silver. “From where we started two and a half years ago, I believe it’s fairly fantastic.”
The NBA has finished revising the transition take foul regulation, putting an end to years of debate over how to handle the frequently criticized strategy.
The play-in tournament will continue to exist for the foreseeable future as well, which was also predicted. In addition to eliminating the “experimental” label from the play-in portion of the postseason, the league’s board of governors approved a plan to provide one free throw when teams are penalized by the take foul on Tuesday.
Adam Silver addressed a number of other topics, including:
Kevin Durant trade rumours
One of the greatest topics of the summer has been Kevin Durant’s trade request, despite the fact that he has a four-year deal with the Brooklyn Nets. Silver hasn’t had a great deal of fun with it.
“We need a two-way street here, “said Silver. “Teams provide players with a great deal of security and assurances, and in exchange, it is expected that they would uphold their half of the agreement. We don’t like to see players asking for trades and we don’t like to see it playing out the way it is. There are always negotiations taking place behind closed doors between players, agents, and organizations.”
Lifecycle Management
In recent years, load management—the fancy word used today when a player is allowed to sit out a game to rest—has been a problem for the league and its clubs. As the parties deepen their discussions for the upcoming collective bargaining agreement, Silver stated that it would continue to be addressed with the players’ association.
Payments via ABA
About 115 ABA players who played at least three seasons but weren’t eligible for NBA pensions will get compensation under a new scheme that the NBA and NBPA jointly sponsored. They will get $3,828 in “recognition payments” for each year of service.
